Marine officer dies in Sulu blast; 2 others hurt

In yet another attack on government troops in southern Philippines, a Marine officer was killed while two others were wounded on Wednesday in a blast caused by an improvised explosive device.

Armed Forces Western Mindanao Command spokesperson Major Ramon David Hontiveros said the Marine officer – whose identity was withheld – was leading a foot patrol about 9 a.m. in Barangay (village) Tugas in Patikul town in Sulu “when an IED exploded nearby.”

The province is widely perceived to be the stronghold of the al-Qaeda-linked Abu Sayyaf, the “prime suspects” in the attack, according to Hontiveros. MORE
