‘Sinnott identified two MILF kidnappers’

By JAIME LAUDE (The Philippine Star) Updated November 18, 2009 12:00 AM

MANILA, Philippines – Catholic priest Michael Sinnott has identified two Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) members who handed him over to authorities last week as two of the four kidnappers that guarded him.

Quoting a debriefing report on Sinnott, a military commander said the priest’s kidnappers were MILF fighters.

Sinnott said after he was snatched at the Columban halfway house in Pagadian City, he was handed over to the two MILF ceasefire committee members who guarded him in the mountains, according to a security official. more (Now the truth is starting to come out)

Peace pact can wait

Philippine Daily Inquirer 11/17/09

First the good news. In her unprecedented satellite forum at the University of Santo Tomas, the first time for a sitting US secretary of state to do a live public interview on Philippine television and before students and academicians of key universities across the Philippines, Hillary Clinton signalled a major American policy shift on Mindanao: any peace accord with the Moro Islamic Liberation Front would have to conform to the Philippine Constitution.

Now the bad news. Clinton urged in the same forum (video) that the Philippine government and the MILF forge an accord before President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo steps down next year. “Strike while the iron is hot,” she said. She cited the case of her own husband, former President Bill Clinton, who had been pushing for a Middle East accord before he stepped down in 2001 but failed because of the recalcitrance of the protagonists. It was only when the next US administration came in, Hillary said, that Yasser Arafat of the Palestine Liberation Organization started to press for an accord, but by that time, it was too late: the hawkish George W. Bush government would have none of it and, in fact, worsened the prospects for Middle East peace with its Iraq adventure. more (when the MOA was thrown out by the Supreme Court, commander Bravo went on a rampage and this is what he had to say:

Question is, what causes to went down to Kulambugan, Kauswagan that costal area on August 18 war encounter?

Commander Bravo: Praise be to God, that is a nice question!

What really causes us is our obligation to God to fight for His cause; But on that particular incident, the cause is all about theMOA. Through these three rulers, may God Curse them, the Mayor of Iligan, Governor Pinol, and Lobregat. They are the main reason. It is because of their barring the peace process here in Mindanao especially here in Lanao del Norte. So we, in 102nd base command made an initiative and went to those areas. more)

‘Don’t negotiate, run after the kidnappers’

By Roel Pareño (The Philippine Star) Updated November 17, 2009 12:00 AM

ISABELA CITY, Basilan , Philippines – Basilan Gov. Jum Akbar ordered the police and military to launch pursuit operations against the Abu Sayyaf holding captive three plywood workers, including two Chinese, as she rejected any attempt to negotiate with the kidnappers.

“I don’t like negotiation this time. I want hot pursuit operation to teach these criminals a lesson,” Akbar said citing the case of Mi-chael Tan, Oscar Lu, both Chinese; and Mark Singson.

The victims are all workers of the Hi-Tech Plywood Co., owned and operated by a certain Jorge Tan, based in Maluso town who were abducted last Nov. 10 while fast asleep in their quarters by 20 to 30 gunmen identified as members of the Abu Sayyaf under Commander Puruji Indama. more

Ignorance is Abu Sayyaf’s dream for Sulu residents

Philippine Daily Inquirer

First Posted 23:42:00 11/17/2009

WHAT could we expect from the Abu Sayyaf?

There’s only one word that describes the Abu Sayyaf and its supporters. They are “terrorists,” and there’s no other word in the dictionary that can best describe them.

Recently, the Abu Sayyaf brutally killed a public school principal, Gabriel Canizares, who was unarmed, defenseless and meant no harm to anyone. But he was not spared by the Abu Sayyaf. I do believe that Canizares’ self-imposed mission was to educate children in the island of Sulu. But he was stopped from fulfilling this dream by the Abu Sayyaf. These terrorists have clearly shown that they do not want the people of Sulu, or the next generation, to be educated by sowing fear among teachers in Sulu and nearby provinces. The Abu Sayyaf and their supporters are driving away teachers who are willing to help their children, relatives and friends to learn how to read, write and become literate and competitive in the 21st generation. The terrorists want the residents of Sulu to remain ignorant forever.

ACTING Defense Secretary Norberto Gonzales on Monday declared that the government will take more decisive action against all groups involved in kidnapping and atrocities in Mindanao, saying that he will not allow Moro groups to commit terroristic acts in furtherance of their cause.

The declaration, which formed Gonzales’s first public policy and guidance in dealing with rebels and bandits in Mindanao, was made during his takeover of the defense portfolio on Monday.

“It’s about time that we tell bandits, especially those beheading people, that crime does not pay. Kasi akala ng mga kidnappers…laro lang ito,” he said.

He noted that kidnapping in the provinces of Sulu, Basilan and Zamboanga is already a “cottage industry” that “must be stopped.”

Gonzales said the government will make a stronger distinction between organizations with political concerns and groups with legitimate concerns but engaged in criminal activities. more
