SHARIFF AGUAK, MAGUINDANAO—The military showed its might Tuesday by flying bomber planes over Maguindanao province, as helicopters dropped leaflets urging forces loyal to the Ampatuan clan to surrender.

The Philippine Air Force launched two OV-10 bomber planes, which flew for 15 minutes at around noon in an operation aimed at intimidating some 2,000 to 2,600 militiamen believed to be under the Ampatuans.

Members of the politically powerful clan are accused of being behind last month’s massacre of 57 people, including 31 media workers.
