ZAMBOANGA CITY — Gunmen Thursday night seized the vice president of state-owned Basilan State College in Isabela City on nearby Basilan Island, a day after the severed head of a factory worker kidnapped by the Abu Sayyaf bandits was recovered near the city plaza.

The college executive, Orlando Fajardo, was inside his house just across the school in Sumagdang, Isabela, when he was abducted by unidentified armed men riding in a van at around 7:30 p.m., Basilan Vice Gov. Al Rasheed Sakalahul said.

Fajardo was whisked into the van.

“An abandoned van, believed to be the same vehicle used by the suspects, was recovered 30 minutes after the incident,” Sakalahul said, adding that pursuit operations were going on.

The new kidnapping occurred some 24 hours after the severed head of Marquez Singson was recovered near Plaza Rizal, also in Isabela, officials said.

Singson, said to be in his 20s, was beheaded by his Abu Sayyaf captors purportedly because of his employer’s failure to pay a ransom demand of P1.5 million.
