ZAMBOANGA, Philippines – Authorities knew of a plan to rescue a commander of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) from the Basilan Provincial Jail, ABS-CBN News learned Monday.

A source told ABS-CBN News that the police and military authorities were tipped off about a plan to rescue Hassan Asnawi alias Laksaw, the deputy commander of the MILF 114th Base Command and the commander of its special operations group in Basilan.

The source said a few days after Asnawi’s arrest last November 7 at the Zamboanga International Airport, they received information that his comrades had come up with an operation plan to rescue him.

The source said the intelligence unit in Zambaonga immediately informed their counterparts in Basilan.

This was also confirmed by Jumaril Sali, the provincial jail warden.
