MANILA, Philippines – Two siblings in the Ampatuan family have taken over leadership of the clan’s fully armed civilian supporters who took part in the Nov. 23 massacre of 57 civilians in Maguindanao, the military said yesterday.

Lt. Col. Michael Samson, military spokesman in Maguindanao, said the group of Ulo Ampatuan and that of Baharin Ampatuan have linked up and have been sighted massing up in the hinterlands of Datu Sangki in Maguindanao near the boundary of Esperanza town in Sultan Kudarat.

Samson said military and police operations against the group, which has about 70 fighters, were launched early yesterday morning and continued until last night.

“We expect contact any time from now onward,” Samson said, adding the Ampatuan loyalists are heavily armed with modern weapons.
