View from the south: Philippine election and Villar’s boat

Political enemies made one in Villar’s boat

by ERROL ESCOBAR

The public has eyed Manny Villar’s increasing popularity as he wants to bag Malacanang in the 2010 elections. But the eyeing of both elite and ordinary people on Villar’s list of candidates does not limit on the presidential candidate alone as it extended to those who make up his senatorial slate.

As a result of Villar’s wooing of Bongbong Marcos, the latter has formally expressed his alliance to the said presidential candidate. When Bongbong, who is from the Kilusang Bagong Lipunan (KBL) of former dictator Ferdinand Marcos, swore on the Nacionalista Party senatorial slate, there was an immediate anticipation of a probable withdrawal of the militant senatoriables Liza Masa of GABRIELA and Saturnino Ocampo of Bayan Muna. Since the militant activists had earlier proclaimed their intentions to run under Villar wing, the entry of Bongbong was thought to be a source of division in Villar’s senatorial slate.

Ironically, the two senatorial hopefuls and the despot’s heir found themselves squeezing on the same boat owned by Villar. With this, the senatorial bid of Marcos that was just aligned on the NP slate had to be the deterring factor for Ocampo and Masa. However, the anticipated result of withdrawal has not come to pass. Instead of a hurried pull-out, Ocampo simply made a remark of “we’ll talk it over”.
