View from the South: Wiping out political warlords

Wiping out political warlords

Zamboanga Times 01/04/2010

The creation by President Arroyo of a special commission, through Executive Order No. 275, amounts to nothing but an exercise in futility. With barely six months left in office, it will take a miracle for her and the commission, mostly composed of senior citizens, to accomplish the mission of dismantling the country’s private armies.
Besides, we are used to having President Arroyo setting deadlines but end up in big failures. Sometime ago, she boldly declared to terminate or end the insurgency problem in Mindanao and the New People’s Army in a year’s time. She also set a deadline to eliminate from the face of the earth all elements of the bandit group Abu Sayyaf. But what happened? Nothing!

Her term as Palace tenant will end at noon on June 30, 2010. This explains why she gave the commission four months to do the job. Of course, she’s dreaming. She failed to dismantle the private armies during nine years as President. How much more in a limited time of four months? I pity the six commissioners, including the blabbermouth and publicity hungry Dante Jimenez.

This writer will forever be an admirer of President Arroyo if in the next four months the private armies of former Ilocos Sur Gov. Luis “Chavit” Singson, the Josons of Nueva Ecija and those in Abra will be dismantled in the next four months. Never mind those in Mindoro, Masbate, Samar and in Mindanao provinces. It can be attended by the next President.
